I found this thread in a nursing forum I frequent to be a fresh, new perspective on the tired, old phenomenon known as "the nursing shortage." All reports on the topic seem to focus on the idea that there is just somehow NOT enough us. That the sheer numbers of the baby boom generation will dwarf any attempt to meet demand by educational institutions across the free world. When in reality, maybe there are enough of us, but we're just hiding due to deplorable work conditions, other more glamourous career options. Or maybe we have actually taken the work life balance to heart? We're just a bunch of under achievers just happy to bet getting by. Because of our hourly wage we can afford to work part time and still manage to pay rent. Is it because nurses aren't dreamers? we're pragmatic people who don't expect more... just happy to keep our heads above water? who knows.
nursing shortage we have been hearing so much about for the last 10 years.
I'm sure there is also a shortage of chimney sweeps and exterminators.
"buzz word" on manthought this post in a forum I frequent was quite interesting - and very true. Anecdotally, I can say that I only know 3-4 people from my grad class who actually work full-time as staff nurses. Food for thought...
